Friday timetable changes, Easter Holidays and Week 2 Pelvic Floor

Dear everyone,
I hope you are all well. Spring is here! More sunshine is doing us all good. I will try to organise a few more walks soon but my time is taken up at the moment with travelling to Manchester for Hyberbaric Oxygen Therapy at Trafford Park. I am pleased to say I am feeling some benefits from this treatment.  Everyone’s MS is different but a symptom common to most people with MS is the severe fatigue that you get. It feels like you have flu constantly and makes life very difficult. Fatigue is just one of the symptoms! That has lifted a little which makes life a bit easier.

Friday timetable changes
Morning

I had to make a difficult decision recently and that is to move my Friday morning Euxton classes to Leyland. From March 31 they will be at Prospect House Sandy Lane Leyland PR25 2EE. This is beautiful venue with a sprung floor and a stage. Zumba at 9.30am and Pilates at 10.30am are on as normal but 11.30am Fitness 55 Plus will change to Chair Fit.
Afternoon
1.30pm Fitness 55 Plus is on as normal at St Andrews Church Hall, Worden Lane Leyland PR25 3EL. At 2.15pm the class is changing to Seated Pilates. The second class concentrates on strength, flexibility, balance and relaxation  You will float home! If anyone would like to attend both classes there will a reduction of £1.

Seated Pilates
1.30pm St Ambrose Church Hall, Moss Lane, Leyland PR25 4XA ( and St Andrews Church Hall from 31 March)

Over the years I have seen the need for a Seated Pilates class. For some people getting up and down of the floor is uncomfortable or they feel nauseous exercising on the floor.  My awareness of the need for this class has grown with dealing with my symptoms of MS which affect my balance amongst other things!

Squatting – why it is important
We do squats in all my classes – the reason being this is a very, very functional exercise. This means the stronger our squatting action is the more likely we are to be able to get up and down off a chair! When I ask people to squat in class all sorts of strange things happen but basically a squat is a sitting down action. In cultures where people squat more as part of daily life there are little or no lumber back problems. In our part of the world we have so many people suffering from back pain. I know that when I had a desk based job I was frequently going to the physio to try to resolve my back pain problems. Here is a clip from Cherry Baker again explaining a correct squat action. Squatting is also good for the pelvic floor.

Pelvic Floors, Seated Pilates and New Wednesday Afternoon Pilates

Pelvic Floors
1 in 3 women and 1 in 10 men have a problem with their pelvic floors. Talking to my friends I suspect it might be a little higher than that in terms of mild problems. I went to a fantastic seminar last  weekend called Up tight and Outta Sight with Cherry Baker who is a specialist in pelvic floor exercise. The things I do for you! It was very funny and informative. Educational stand up comedy. I am going to invite Cherry over to Leyland for one of her seminars. It is a little risqué. I have sent a clip of a starter Pelvic floor exercise but  this is Cherry being well behaved..

New Seated Pilates 1.30pm St Ambrose Church Hall from Wednesday 15th March.
Over the years I have seen the need for a Seated Pilates class. For some people getting up and down of the floor is uncomfortable or they feel nauseous exercising on the floor.  The new class in going to be at St Ambrose Church Hall Moss Lane Leyland PR254XA from next Wednesday  15th March at 1.30pm.

Sod Sitting Get Moving: Getting Active into 60s 70s and Beyond – a new book by Diana Moran.
On the way to work last Monday I caught a bit of an interview with Diana Moran the green goddess. Some of you will remember her. She seems to still be wearing green. She was talking about being as active as possible as we get older and how that is seen as ‘the miracle cure’. Here is an interview with her on Loose Women.

Studies
Being a fitness instructor involves continuous study- something I love. Of course you don’t have to once you have your basic qualifications but for me it makes my job extra interesting. Of course last year was difficult to even concentrate enough to learn but I am slowly starting to feel ready and I am starting off gently with Mindfulness for Health Professionals which involves daily relaxation practice something I am really enjoying. I am also studying the Brainfit TM course which is movement and meditation bringing  me some refreshing approaches. There is more and more scientific evidence emerging on the benefits of this kind of relaxation.
Here is one of the relaxation practices for you find yourself a quiet place – it takes about 8 minutes.

Important: Venue change Friday afternoon 27th January, coreballs and walk and talk

Important: Venue change Friday afternoon 27th January
The 1.30pm Fitness 55+ and the 2.15pm 50+ Circuits classes will be held at Prospect House Sandy Lane Leyland PR25 2EE for one
week only.

Stability Ball/ Swiss ball/ Core Ball – do you have one of these?
Do you have a core ball sitting around the house that you dutifully blew up but haven’t used since. They are great pieces of exercise equipment if you know what to do with them. One thing you need to do first is check that it is the right size for you. When you are sitting on the ball your knees need to be at 90 degrees. This is shown in the video below along with 3 exercises explaining good technique

I am thinking of running a Core Ball course. I have run this kind of class before and it is great fun! If you would be interested just email me diane@dofitness.org.

Walk and Talk on Worden Park Tuesday 31 January
Meet at 2pm near the Dog Wash in the main car park. We will go through the woods and probably go to the Folly Café for a coffee for anyone who wants to. Wear good walking shoes/ boots as it gets a bit muddy in the woods.

Have a good week everyone

Raring to go and what’s on in January

It is fantastic to be back and seeing everyone raring to go. A break from classes is really useful because it reminds us what we feel like if we don’t exercise. Humans are designed to move and be active!

Living with Relapsing Remitting Multiple Sclerosis
To get the diagnosis of MS is very frightening but also a relief because usually you have known for sometime that something is wrong. Symptoms vary from person to person.  My last relapse gave me left sided weakness. I have recovered 90% strength and coordination. I have to be very careful on stairs as I easily fall through balance issues and foot drop where I catch my left heel. Typing is getting better as I am regaining more coordination in my left hand. I will take a walking stick if I am walking a distance or on uneven ground. Extreme fatigue and brain fog are my other  symptoms. This is soul destroying if you are used to being active and using your mind.
Pilates is extremely good for my condition for balance and core strength. All classes are brilliant because of you the wonderful class members who make me feel so much better with your humour, chats and encouragement. Thank you.

Lots of love to you all
