Easter holidays, men and the other me

Hi everyone,

Easter Holidays We have no classes week beginning 14th of April and no classes on Easter Monday (21st April). Classes start again on Wednesday 23rd April.

Men and Circuits I became aware that a lot of my classes are geared up for people who enjoy dancing (Zumba and Fitness 55+) so we now have two new circuit classes  with no dancing elements in them. Men are coming to these classes and really making fabulous progress. If your husbands or partners are free during the day there is now something for them! Mondays 50+ Circuits 9.30am at Wellington Park, Church Road, Leyland PR25 3AB Wednesdays 60+ and Starter Circuits 11.30am Prospect House, Sandy Lane, Leyland PR25 2EE

Zumba Our latest track in Zumba is Happy by Pharrell Williams https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y6Sxv-sUYtM . Play this if you are feeling a bit down -it’s guaranteed to pick you up. Wednesdays 9.30am and  Thursdays 6.30pm  Prospect House, Sandy Lane, Leyland PR25 2EE and  Fridays 9.30am Euxton Community Centre PR7 6JH
PilatesA great way to relax and beat stress Pilates is a form of exercise that literally re-introduces you to your own body. The better you understand your body and how it works, the easier it will be for you to release tension, relax and beats the stresses and strains of modern life. Mondays 10.30am at Wellington Park, Church Road, Leyland PR25 3AB,  Wednesdays 10.30am and Thursdays 7.30pm Prospect House, Sandy Lane, Leyland PR25 2EE and  Fridays 10.30am Euxton Community Centre PR7 6JH

The other me I have now done a month in my other job. I haven’t said too much about it because I was finding my feet and trying to understand what the job entailed. Well my role is to recruit and find placements for volunteers. Although I am employed by Age Concern the project is part of Volunteer One Lancashire and is for any age volunteers. Someone described it as a ‘broker’ but I like  to use the term ‘matchmaker’ of volunteers with suitable organisations. So if you want to do some volunteer work please let me know or if you are involved with an organisation that needs volunteers – please let me know too.

Wishing Brenda a speedy recovery. Brenda is a bit of super star in Fitness 55+ as she is a really fit 80 year old. She is an advert for keeping exercising. She fell and is recovering from a break but she says if she hadn’t been so fit the outcome would have been much worse.

Congratulations to Joanne from Pilates on the birth of her baby!

Feeling good and new 60+ Circuits class Mondays

Hi everyone,

I hope you are all enjoying that spring feeling. It is lovely to find the days getting longer. I finally feel totally recovered from the virus and even shopping in Tescos is a pleasure now I am not dragging myself around! Health is everything! My son Mano is coming back to the UK at the end of this month. I haven’t seen him for over two years!! Can’t wait to see him. Facebook and Skype have kept us in touch but it will be lovely to have him around for a little while. I also made a decision to go and see my son Yianni in Cyprus at Easter. He has been there since last September so he has really got to know Nicosia and he will show my daughter Eleni and me round. She is excited at seeing her big brothers and going abroad. She didn’t fall for it when we went to Wales and tried to convince she had been ‘abroad’. It wasn’t ‘abroad’ enough for her.

60+ Circuits We are starting another 60+ Circuits class from next Monday 17th March 9.30am at Wellington Park, Church Road, Leyland PR25 3AB. This class is designed for over 60s or people returning to exercise. After warm up exercises we go use a circuit series of exercises. Everybody works at their own level on the individual exercises. This is following by balance, strength and flexibility exercises. The cardio vascular exercise in this class is not dance based. This  is turning into a very sociable  class. This is a great class for men and we have roughly half men and half women. Mondays 9.30am at Wellington Park, Church Road, Leyland PR25 3AB and Wednesdays 11.30am Prospect House, Sandy Lane, Leyland PR25 2EE

Pilates I was away in Glossop at the weekend ‘topping up’ my Pilates training with Cherry Baker who founded Modern Pilates. I always learn so much and as my classes know I will be experimenting on them with new ideas. Mondays 10.30am at Wellington Park, Church Road, Leyland PR25 3AB, Wednesdays 10.30am and Thursdays 7.30pm Prospect House, Sandy Lane, Leyland PR25 2EE and  Fridays 10.30am Euxton Community Centre PR7 6JH

Zumba Zumba is the best thing for lifting your spirits. The classes are really good fun at the moment – thanks everyone Wednesdays 9.30am and and Thursdays 6.30pm  Prospect House, Sandy Lane, Leyland PR25 2EE and  Fridays 9.30am Euxton Community Centre PR7 6JH

Fitness 55+These classes are going from strength to strength and I can see real improvements in people’s fitness. Well done everyone! Mondays 11.30am at Wellington Park, Church Road, Leyland PR25 3AB and Fridays 11.30am Euxton Community Centre PR7 6JH

Keep moving for your mind not just your body

I had to write a short article for the Leyland Leader this week. Here is part of it below:
When we think about exercise we often just focus on the physical benefits but the mental benefits are often overlooked but they are highly significant to our health. Here  are some of the benefits:   -When you exercise the brain releases feel-good brain chemicals such as endorphins, serotonin and dopamine so within a very short space of time you feel more positive. -Your mood is lifted by a sense of achievement you don’t get by sitting in front of the TV -You can relax more deeply after exercise. This can make a big difference if you are going through a stressful time. – Exercise can be a great way to make social connections whether it is in a class or in a team Social isolation can have a massively negative health impact.   There was a great front page article on the front page of The Times this week. The paragraph below is a very brief summary:
Exercise can improve the performance of the brain by boosting memory and cognitive processing. This happens at all ages from young children to mature adults. In fact, exercise is as important in staving off dementia as keeping your mind active latest research has found. Regular exercise is key. Keeping exercising helps you maintain a stronger, faster brain. Combining exercise with other healthy lifestyle choices can help reduce the risk of developing dementia by 60% .

60+ Circuits Wednesdays 11.30am Prospect House, Sandy Lane, Leyland PR25 2EE       Our  gentle older persons circuit class has gone from strength to strength. We are talking about starting another class! It is ideal for people who do not want to go to a dance based class. It came about when I was contacted by the NHS Healthy Lifestyle Team as I am GP Referral trained instructor. They wanted a class for their participants to graduate onto after they had done the Healthy Lifestyle Programme. It is at 11.30am Wednesday mornings at Prospect House, Sandy Lane, Leyland.
Stamps  A big thank you from Chris Taylor in Zumba  who is collecting stamps for RNIB.  You have brought in lots! Just bring them to class and I will forward them to her.
Energy levels I am back teaching all my daytime classes – thanks to Karen for covering. Henry and I are sharing the Thursday night Zumba  again this week. I have been warned it can take 3 months to recover totally from that horrid virus! I have had to learn patience big style! I can’t wait to get back to normal.

Newsletter 4th February

I hope you are well. I have been told that I had flu followed by a virus. The after effects of the virus are a horrible cough and extreme tiredness. I have had all the check ups and I have been told I just have to be patient and avoid vigorous exercise for a couple of weeks. This is not great when you are a fitness instructor! So for now I will just be teaching Pilates and 60+ Circuits with possibly a bit of Forever Fitness 55+. Other teachers will be covering my more vigorous classes. I am really missing jiggling around but now have to listen to my body and my doctor. Thanks everyone who has asked about me and to the people who have told me stories about other people who have had the same virus and their symptoms- it has been reassuring.

FFIT Fitness Fusion with Interval Training We have decided to run this class as a course or blocks lasting for 5 weeks at a time. So for the time being it is not running as a rolling programme. I will let you know when the first block will start.
Monday morning Zumba 9.30am Wellington Park This class has finished for the time being. Thank you to those people who came to the class. But I have had to make some changes to my timetable in preparation for my new job.

Stamps If you have any used stamps you don’t know what to do with Chris Taylor in Zumba is collecting them for RNIB. Just bring them to class and I will forward them to her. A thank you to Chris too for coming early and helping me unload my equipment. This has been really helpful while I have been a wet lettuce these last few weeks.
Your events If you have any events you would like to let people know about, say you are hosting charity event, please let me have the details and I can put it in the newsletter.

Lots of love
