We have loved the last few days Nordic Walking with sunshine and blue skies. No rain!


Looking after your blood pressure
A subject that came up recently in class was blood pressure and what is a healthy range. Normal blood pressure is defined as less than 120/80 mmHg but higher than 90/60mmHg. High blood pressure (also known as Hypertension) doesn’t often have symptoms but has serious consequences if untreated. See useful NHS guide below:

Chair Exercise classes for Progress Housing residents
If you know anyone who lives in a Progress Housing home please tell them about a class available for them. It is Chairfit Mondays 3pm Lower House Community Centre Welsby Road Leyland. For more information they can ring me on 07818444841.

If you or a friend have arthritis or mobility issues a good place to start with exercise is a chair based class. Mondays Seated Pilates 12.30am and Wednesdays Chairfit 11.30am. Our new class is on Thursdays 11.15am at St. Mary’s Community Centre on Broadfield Drive.

Week beginning 16 January, walking in the rain, muscle mass and next Nordic Walking technique course.

Hello,
I hope you have had a good week despite the rain. We still got out on our Nordic Walks and felt great afterwards. This might be the reason why Walking in the rain: 4 wellness benefits of rainy walks | Psychologies.


Age and Muscle Mass
Many things change as we age such as our eyesight or our hearing but something that often gets overlooked is our muscular strength. Muscle mass decreases 3-8% per decade after the age of 30 and the rate of decline is even higher after 60 years. Apart from making life harder for everyday tasks and putting you at higher risk of falls it has many implications in several conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease and osteoporosis. The great thing is we can counter this decline with resistance training and proper nutrition. This will not only improve muscle mass and strength but reduces the likelihood of getting type 2 diabetes. Try to do this kind of training twice a week. Use resistance equipment (bands or weights) strong enough or heavy enough to tire the muscles after 12 repititions.

Week beginning 9 January, next Nordic Walking Technique course, Tuesdays Nordic Walking is back and new Chairfit class

Hello,

It was lovely to see everyone last week for our first week back after Christmas!
This time of year we can feel quite low with grey skies and rainy days but there are things we can do to help ourselves. Most importantly moving whether it is simply going for a walk or dancing round the kitchen will boost your mood. The other thing, which is really important in the UK due to lack of sunlight in the winter, is to take vitamin D3. It will help with maintaining healthy bones too.

Happy New Year! Classes start Tuesday 3 January

Hello,
First of all I just want to wish you a wonderful Happy New Year!
The break has been peaceful and full of lovely family moments and I finally recovered from the nasty bug but I am looking forward to getting back into our exercise routine.


New class- Chairfit class 11.15am Thursdays St Mary’s Community Centre (formerly The Priory Club)
I have been asked to take over a chair exercise class at St Mary’s Community Centre on Broadfield Drive. This gives you more options for chair based exercise. Starts Thursday 5 January.

New class- Nordic Walking Tuesdays 11.30am from Tuesday 10 January

We are going to have a Tuesday Nordic Walking group again from 10 January starting at Leyland Tesco Extra carpark.

Money raised for local MS Society knitted Teddies
You raised £75 by buying the knitted Teddies for stocking fillers. Thank you to you and especially to Judith for all her hard work knitting. A big thank you from the Chorley and Leyland MS Society. Chorley and Leyland Group | Multiple Sclerosis Society UK (mssociety.org.uk). They have really helped me and some class members over the years.

‘After Christmas’ Christmas Do Leyland
I had no luck finding a suitable venue in Leyland for a Chrismas Do this year so I have decided to wait until after Christmas when the banqueting suite (old barn) will be available at Worden Hall. It has been totally refurbished and is looking beautiful but not quite ready yet.

Christmas stocking fillers to raise funds for local Multiple Sclerosis Society
An amazing class member has been knitting teddies to give as stocking fillers. They are £5 per teddy. Thank you Judith for all your hardwork. They are beautiful.
