Week beginning 16 June – no Monday classes at Prospect House

Hello,
After returning from such a wonderful, healthy experience in Portugal last week, I started with a chest infection (probably from the flight). It has shocked me how ill I have felt. So I am sorry I am going to cancel Monday’s classes to give me chance to go to the GP and recover a bit more. I will take Monday’s classes off Gymcatch and if you have booked you will get a class credit. Sorry for such a short email newsletter but I am going back to bed with lemon and honey tea.

Week beginning Monday 9 June – classes starting again

Hello,
I feel so lucky to have experienced the Yoga Retreat in Portugal. Just 7 of  us from Germany, Spain, the Netherlands, Ireland and the UK. So many interesting conversations were had! It really was a most rejuvenating experience with lovely company, wonderful food, gentle exercise and relaxation.

Holiday dates and recharging your batteries

Hello,

Despite the change in the weather, I hope you are enjoying the bank holiday weekend.
I am looking forward to taking some time off, especially when I go to Portugal for the Yoga retreat. It is easy, when you work for yourself, not to take time out to look after yourself. Sorry to leave you for a couple of weeks, but it is really important for everyone to recharge their batteries.

I am taking 2 weeks off from Do Fitness classes in the last week of May and the first week of June. The first week is to catch up with myself, and the second week is to go to a Yoga retreat in Portugal run by a French friend of mine. She is also a Breathworks instructor. I have never been to Portugal before, so I am looking forward to it.

Week beginning 19 May, holidays and lung health

Hello,
The weather has been stunning recently, and I have been making the most of it by going to my allotment, which is my happy place. (Although watering has become a bigger job than usual!) I just love being out in the fresh air, which leads me to today’s topic of lung health and the importance of air quality.

Looking after your lung health
When I was a teenager, I had a couple of jobs where I was exposed to a lot of cigarette smoke, but I was lucky my parents didn’t smoke, so I lived in a smoke-free home. Some of my class members were not so lucky and have been living with the consequences later in life. Week beginning 12 May

Hello,
I was chatting with one of my class members who said she was starting to find walking uphill more difficult. I asked if she lived in a bungalow and she said yes. Believe it or not, having to climb stairs several times a day helps keep your fitness levels up. If you do live in a bungalow, the first exercise below is especially for you. No Pilates or Chairfit on Wednesday 14 May, due to a class member’s funeral
Sadly, one of our class members has died. Judy Holroyd, our lovely Wednesday Pilates class member, started to have problems with her speech and swallowing in Spring last year and after several visits to consultants, she was diagnosed with Motor Neurone disease in January this year. Her last Pilates class was in December last year, so it has been a shock how fast this cruel disease has taken her. The funeral is 11.30am on Wednesday, 14 May at Charnock Richard Crematorium.

Week beginning 5 May and holidays

Hello,
The secret weapon to healthy ageing is exercise. Keep your exercise challenging, interesting and enjoyable. Try to have a mixture of exercise types, including strength training (Pilates or Chairfit) and cardiovascular (Zumba or fast walking). Include some balance challenges and stretches. Variety is the spice of life and this goes for exercise too.
