Week beginning 18 August – everybody’s body is different

Hello,

Remember, everybody’s body is different, and in class I always try to provide alternatives and modifications. The most important thing is to do something. You might not be able to do press-ups/push-ups on the floor anymore, but you could do them against a wall. Push-ups are essential for strength in midlife – here’s how to do them properly, without injuring yourself
We all know our body changes over time, but by keeping doing something will be much better than doing nothing. Be more aware of how many hours you sit. Try not to sit for long periods, as this is so detrimental to our health. Why we should sit less – NHS

Week beginning 11 August- new classes and holiday dates

Hello,
One of the new classes that started last week in Leyland is Forever Fit at Prospect House. The idea of the class is to give everyone ‘doable’ challenges.

Here is a quick description of Forever Fit:
This is a standing class that starts with a warm-up to motivating music. A section of more intense exercise to improve your cardio-vascular fitness, a mini circuits section, weights for strength, and a cool down with balance and stretches.  Anyone can join as individuals work at their own level.

Week beginning 4 August, longevity and new classes

Hello,
As I said last week, I love it when class members tell me about something they can do now that they couldn’t do before coming to classes. An inspiring class member who has had treatment for breast cancer, plus she is recovering from a stroke, was out walking with her family when she had to climb over a high gate (a herd of cows had blocked the path). She said she could do it from all the strength she had gained from Chairfit. I can’t tell you how good she felt with that achievement!

A word that keeps coming up in the media and fitness articles is Longevity (a long duration of individual life). In the article below, they listed 3 workouts which are important to do regularly and consistently:
1. Something for cardiovascular fitness eg walking, dancing, swimming
2. Strength training eg weight training, Pilates with weights
3 Mobility eg yoga or Pilates
I asked scientists about the best exercise for longevity – and they all said the same 3 workouts

Of course, it is not just about how long you live, it is about the quality and enjoyment in life. Being able to be active and do things that give you pleasure is the key. Other class members report how Pilates (because of improved strength, flexibility and balance) makes gardening easier, which brings them so much joy!

Week beginning 28 July – timetable changes

Hello,
I love it when my class members tell me about how they feel their classes are helping them. Last week, a class member said she went to help her daughter decorate, and she painted a wall with a roller on a pole, which requires arm and upper body strength. Her daughter couldn’t believe how strong she was and asked how she could do it so fast. My class member said it was all from her Pilates classes!

Week beginning 21 July- it is never too late to start exercising

Hello,
Sometimes we limit ourselves with our own thoughts. I can’t do something because  … I am too old, too unfit, not strong enough etc. Fitness is about our habits and mindset. You won’t be able to run a 5 km overnight if you haven’t run 10 metres in the last 25 years. It will take regular practice and small increments to build up to 5km. Remember, too, it is about finding things you enjoy and are at your level. Running might not be for you, but dancing might be. You might not be able to stand for a Zumba class, but you can go to a chair-based class.

Fitness Over 40: Inspirational Stories That Prove You’re Never Too Old to Start
(Sadly, the oldest marathon runner, Fauja Singh, was killed in a road traffic accident last week.)

No classes at Euxton Community Centre on July 22
The GP practices and Falls Prevention team in the area have been referring people into a programme called Strong and Steady, which helps people with their strength, flexibility, balance and reaction times. This can greatly reduce the risk of falling as we get older. I have been asked to go along to talk to the group at their last session to encourage them to continue exercising by coming to our Do Fitness classes. (Sorry, it is at the same time as our Euxton classes.)

Week beginning 14 July

Hello,
I hope you are coping ok with the heat. Things should cool down next week, making classes more comfortable. Remember to keep hydrated before, after and during class.

How to keep cool in hot weather | Age UK

One of my lovely class members has unfortunately broken her foot, and in order to get upstairs, she had to shuffle on her bottom and use the strength in her arms to lift herself up each step. Her daughter was impressed by how strong she was. She has kept strong by consistently coming to class and doing strength work. You never know when your hard work will pay off! Wishing her a speedy recovery.
