Summer holidays, Parkinson’s, New Longton dates, Syrian Bistro, No Pilates on 13 July and Christmas Do!

Hello everyone

Welcome to the new people who have joined a Do Fitness class recently. Many of you
have commented on how friendly everyone is. Thank you to everyone who has made
new people feel so welcome. It is so incredibly important.
Fiona and I had a stand at Leyland Festival and spoke to a lot of people during the day about exercise options. The message is- there is always something for everyone. We were a bit cold though! It wasn’t a particularly a warm sunny day..


Saturday 13 July
There will be no Pilates on Saturday 13 July but Fiona will take Nordic Walking on
Worden Park. I am at my lovely nephew’s wedding.

New Longton class dates
Due to an event at the hall there will be no New Longton classes on  29 July and 5 August. The regular classes are Chairfit 3.45pm and Pilates 4.30pm on Mondays at New Longton Methodist Church Hall.

Christmas Do.
Yes – this year there will be 3 options: 
1) Rivington Hall Barn Tuesday 26 November -12 to 4pm 
2) lunch in Leyland date and place  undecided  
3) an evening pub get together in Leyland.
The reason I am talking about Christmas in July is that the Rivington Barn Christmas
parties are so popular we need to book by the end of July. If you would like to come to Rivington Hall Barn please pay a £5 deposit by the end of July.  Here is a flavour of

Parkinson’s and exercise
There are now quite a few people with Parkinson’s attending Do Fitness classes
especially Circuits, Seated Pilates and Chairfit. Exercise is very important and again it is

Summer Holidays
The Do Fitness summer holiday is from Tuesday 20 August and we  start back on
Tuesday 27 August -the day after the Bank Holiday. There will be no classes on and from Tuesday 20 August until we start back on Tuesday 27 August.

Syrian Bistro
South Ribble Borough Council have set up a scheme as part of the refugee resettlement
programme called the Syrian Bistro at Café Rococco. It is a monthly event at Saturday
lunchtime and tickets costs £16. I have booked on 27 July.It is really hard to start all over again in a new culture with a new language having lost your home, neighbourhood and maybe even family members. https://www.southribble.gov.uk/Leylands-New-Syrian-Bistro

Leyland Festival, Overcoming MS, Next Nordic Walking technique courses and new classes

Overcoming MS Conference
I was in Edinburgh last weekend for the Overcoming MS Conference. First of all I had never been to Edinburgh before and it is a beautiful place to visit and I shall go back with the family. The conference was really inspiring and helped me understand in more depth why the protocol is advised and what research it is based on. If you know anyone who has been recently diagnosed and they want to know more about OMS here is the website www.overcomingms.org or they can call me.

Next Nordic Walking Technique Courses and New Wellbeing Group with Dawn
The next Nordic Walking courses are coming soon. There will be a regular Nordic Walking course Saturday 29 June and 6 July at 11.45am if you can walk a couple of miles and the Nordic Walking Wellbeing Technique course on Thursday 4 June and 11 July at 4.30pm if you are want a shorter walk. Both courses are over 2 sessions on the dates given.

Do Fitness is coming to New Longton
I have been approached by a GP in New Longton and asked to start some classes there. From Monday 17 June there will be Chairfit 3.45pm and Pilates 4.30pm on Mondays at New Longton Methodist Church Hall.

Saturday morning Pilates
From Saturday 22 June there will be a Saturday 9am Pilates class at the Leyland 2nd division Scout Hut St Andrews Way for people who find evening classes difficult to get to.

Radio Leyland, May 27 Bank Holiday, New classes in New Longton and Saturday morning Pilates

New venue for Monday night Pilates and new Zumba class

Venue change Monday night Pilates.

Monday night Pilates is moving to Euxton C of E School Bank Lane Euxton from 14th September at 7.30pm. We have finished at St. Chad’s in Wheelton. Sorry to the people who have further to travel.

New Zumba starting at Euxton C of E School Monday nights.
This class is starting on 14th September at 6.45pm. Just like the old days for those who used to come to Euxton Monday night Zumba!!

I am reading a book called The Second Half of your Life and yes because I am 52 this is of great interest. It was recommended to me by a lovely lady in Pilates who is the same age as me.(Thank you x) This book is very readable and as I opened to a random page I found myself reading this sentence:”Regular exercise will make the biggest difference to your quality of life for the rest of your life. This is the 21st Century version of the ‘fountain of youth'”

and “Think of exercise as sending a constant grow message to get stronger, more limber and functionally younger”

Now we are not talking about  intense elite athletic exercise we are talking about regular exercise both aerobic and strength but always just a little bit outside your comfort zone.

Summer holidays 2015 – no classes week beginning 27th July

This year has gone so fast! The summer holiday season is nearly upon us. For Do Fitness classes we have one week off in summer. This year it is the last week of July. There are no classes from Monday 27th to Friday 31st July
All back to normal on Monday 3rd August. Have a good holiday where and when ever you are going.

How to relax
I have been thinking a lot about the impact of the cumulative effect of stress on our bodies and minds. Sometimes it can creep up on us for all sorts of reasons and manifest itself in different ways such as high blood pressure, anxiety or fatigue. Obviously if there is an easily identifiable cause of this stress we can try to change this where possible.

By coming to classes you are using the fabulous fixer of exercise to lessen the impact of stress. 
Here a few extra things you could try :

Going for walk has an amazing effect – it sounds so simple that we often forget its positive effect. We have the beautiful Worden Park in Leyland to enjoy.

Taking time out to listen to guided relaxation–  some of the best ones I have found are on www.honestguys.co.uk. They have calming voices which have an immediate effect. One of my favourites is Blissful Deep Relaxation on http://thehonestguys.co.uk/page11.html  – lasts about 20 minutes,.Or on your phone you can go to youtube and search for thehonestguys

Eat well when stressed, we reach for quick fixes – stimulants like coffee, or foods high in fat or sugar. But this diet compounds the problem. Sugar, nicotine and alcohol also stimulate adrenaline in the body, another hormone released to prepare you for fight or flight. When you are under stress it is even more important to eat well. Really focus on improving your nutrition.
