I am taking a few days off for my husband’s hip replacement surgery. 

Ladies Night – to raise funds for St Marys Community Centre
I am hoping to be there to support this event. St Mary’s Parish has taken on the ownership of the former Priory Club in Leyland and has turned it into a parish and community NOT FOR PROFIT resource run by unpaid volunteers. The centre is the home of the Churches Together in Leyland, Food Bank and Furniture Scheme, Radio Leyland and many other community activities.


Class member has book published
Congratulations to our class member Sylvie Nicholls who has had a book published! The book launch is on Tuesday 1 November at Leyland Methodist Church. The book is available on Amazon.

World Menopause Day 2022 – Tuesday 18 October

There has been so much more awareness of the impact of menopause on women’s lives recently. Davina McCall did an amazing job to raise awareness with her television programme: Davina McCall: Sex, Mind and the Menopause – All 4 (channel4.com). The impact on work, relationships and mental health cannot be underestimated and the better informed we are the better we are prepared to look after ourselves and the women around us. I am supporting an event on Tuesday organised by the Primary Care Network of an number of local GP practices.

Monday 6.30pm Nordic Walking moves to Buckshaw Tesco start from 10 October
This allows us to walk through well-lit routes in the dark evenings in winter.

Class members going to volunteer in Zambia
Two of our class members, Alison and Jayne are going to volunteer in the Jack and Jill School in Zambia and would like to take as much as possible for the children. Anything anyone can donate please bring into class next week and I will collect and give to Alison and Jayne. Thank you.
‘We are a party of 11 going to Choma in Zambia for 2 weeks to help out at the Jack and Jill school, the children have next to nothing so we are taking as much as we can, warm clothes up to age 11, warm socks and underwear are particularly needed, as are jumpers    We are also taking things to do crafts with, paint palettes, colouring pencils, wool, crochet hooks, glue sticks etc x would be so wonderful if anyone could help out’ x Alison and Jayne

Weights and resistance training really important as we age
Last week there was a lot of media interest in weight and resistance training and how it benefits us as we age Pumping weights could help you live longer – BBC News. Luckily, we have already been doing this in our classes!

Next Nordic Walking Technique Course Saturday 8 October 1.30pm
A fabulous way to keep fit outdoors once you have done the technique course. Groups meet Monday evenings, Wednesday afternoons, Saturday morning and Thursday afternoon for the Wellbeing group (shorter distance slower pace) to book Timetable and book a class – Do Fitness with Diane Oakden or diane@dofitness.org or 07818444841

Music in class
I am always listening for new music to use in class particularly for Zumba, Zumba Gold and Chairfit. One night I couldn’t sleep so I was listening to the World Service and this documentary came on Outlook – My hunt for Rodriguez, a missing music legend – BBC Sounds. An interesting story so that is why we might be using some of his music in class. As an instructor it costs me about £400 a year to have a music licence but it means I can use some brilliant music.

Exercise and  Arthritis – there is always something you can do.
As I am writing this email I can hear the sound of my husband on his rowing machine downstairs. Over the last couple of years he has developed severe osteoarthritis in his hip so much so that he has to use crutches to walk. He used to go running but when that became impossible he starting cycling and using the rowing machine (non-weight bearing exercise). Other things that can be done are water-walking or swimming, Nordic Walking where the poles take pressure off the joint or chairbased exercise. This means that you are maintaining strength around the joint, retaining your cardiovascular fitness and also managing your weight. This ensures that in my husband’s case he should recover quickly after his hip replacement next month.Exercise and Arthritis – Arthritis Action
